Mark Foley, the GOP and The Catholic Church
The saddest thing about the Mark Foley scandal is the American Political System. House Majority Leader Dennis Hastert should be impeached and face criminal charges. As a middle school teacher, I had to participate in a Child Abuse and Violence Prevention workshops. I then had to sign a document committing to report any serious evidence of child abuse or face legal prosecution. It was part of my responsibility as a school teacher to ensure the safety of the children in my care, especially against child abuse. It is the sole responsibility of House of Representatives to protect the rights of the people. Everyone in the House of Representatives is culpable. The reason is where there is smoke there is fire, and there is a rumor mill everywhere. Having said that, there are varying degrees of culpability.
The number one person responsible for this fiasco is Dennis Hastert. Not only should he be impeached, he should be prosecuted. First he doesn't know anything, then he does. Typical American politics. Time for America to stop talking about Michael Jackson and be that man looking in the mirror. How can a pedophile be allowed to continue this pattern of behavior; how can the safety of the children sent to learn about the political system be less important than holding onto a single seat.
Foley then came out and used the McGreavy defense I am a Gay American. That pissed me off.
Being Gay and being a pedophile are mutually exclusive. But then it came out he was molested by a Catholic Priest as an alter boy. I feel sorry for Foley. It seems that this cycle of pedophilia is a serious issue, with victims of this horrific act perpetuating the same behavior. I wonder what the real impact Catholic Church Priest pedophilia has had on the children of America. Foley needs help and should go to jail.
The American political system will really need to refocus and reform itself. Furthermore, if Republican interests continue to utilize Fox News to distort
the truth to maintain their power base, what is the next step for America

At an event honoring the civil rights activists at The New York Historical Society on October 5th, Raymond Arsenault, author of Freedom Riders 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice, dubbed this group of male and female historical figures as truly heroic.
One such honoree was recently retired New York State Court of Appeals Judge George Bundy Smith. In 1961, while studying law at Yale Law School, Smith became one of the 436 freedom riders committed to the nonviolent protest of Jim Crow laws in southern states. As Smith explains, one Sunday morning he picked up a copy of The New York Times to find pictures of burning buses, those that had already been stopped with violence on their routes. Smith received permission to postpone his law school exams to join the ride to Jackson, Mississippi with The Rev. William Sloane Coffin Jr. and others. But the bus never made it that far the protesters were arrested at a lunch counter in Montgomery, Alabama. Smith, who grew up in segregated Washington, D.C., says of his decision to join the ride,
We wanted to put an end to racial segregation?we were trying to change the world.
Smith served the state of New York as a judge for 31 years, the last 14 on the highest court in the state. His forced retirement from the Court of Appeals came in spite of numerous appeals by local politicians and state bar associations to Governor Pataki to keep Smith on the court. Pataki chose to replace the well respected jurist, and the only African-American on the high court, instead of reappointing Smith and allowing him to serve until his 70th birthday next year.
