I’ve been hearing this song on Hot97 a lot lately. I never heard of the artist before then. He goes by the name Don Trip. The Memphis emcee is currently signed to an imprint on Interscope. This song caught my attention with it’s soulful intro and sample. The crafting of this track is genius because it’s simple yet complex at the same time. Generally speaking, Don Trip is a father who is expressing his frustration about not being allowed to see his son through a heated rant. He’s obviously speaking to his son through the song, but he is also making demands from his baby’s mother. I like how he paints a picture of his situation with his lyrics, and there’s no denying that the raw emotion is there. I also like how it shows the other side of “the norm,” the norm being a father not being in his son’s life because he’s a deadbeat. In this case, the father wants to be involved but the mother of his child presents an obstacle of him seeing his son. To add to the emotionally charged lyrics from Don Trip, Cee-lo’s unique soulful voice was the icing on the cake to evoke feelings from the listener. We already know that the song is a plead for Don Trip to see his son, but Cee-lo’s hook makes you sympathize even more with the situation. I’ve never experienced a situation like this, but I definitely felt the emotion and hard feelings through this song. That’s what makes this a powerful statement, not just a song.
