Tupac was an unbelievable talent; he was to hip-hop what Martin Luther King Jr was to the Civil Rights Movement. His legacy and influence like Dr. King's still lives on today despite all the trials and tribulations he encountered while still alive. Tupac didnt attend college, but he did attend an art high school i believe in Baltimore, MD where he met Jada Pinkett-Smith(not 100% bout this, but this is what Ive been informed of); his predecessor Dr. King entered college at the age of 15 and in 1948 graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelors in sociology. Now while my group members and I are specifically composing this blog for a grade in class; I had to figure out a way to relate it all back to hip-hop and the empowernent of black people because that's been the main topic of the articles Ive been expected to create while a member of the site. So it always helps to be creative in certain ways so that it pertains to your assignment as well as fun and entertaining for my own personal enjoyment. Any who I have recently enrolled in the Art Institute of Washignton located in the nations capitol.
The whole idea or concept behind the Tupac and Martin Luther King Jr. comparison is to clarify that while Tupac didn't attend college, he still managed to become a successful rapper because he was a unique being who was destined to touch the lives of millions. As was Dr King who was something like a prophet in every sense of the word. I say all that to say this; We all want to be the next Jay-Z, Tupac, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Lil Wayne, and even Barack Obama, but what are we doing to atleast attempt to make our dreams a reality? Are we extremely talented but lack focus and motivation? Do we excpect because we are talented to land a recording contract like some of our favorite entertainers? You think that once you do obtain that degree from college that success is suppose to be handed to you on a silver platter? It's not going to happen. Well back to the topic at hand; In reaching our new found heights ; sum of us will have to do it the old fashion way(that being school) in order to be successful. Are we afraid of our potential and the fact that anything is truly possible if you believe you can achieve? There are plenty of reasons why young high school students across the world should attend Art Institute of Washington or any Art Institute for that matter. My group members and I feel one of the most exciting things about starting college is knowing that you are one step closer to being what the industry is missing. Believe it or not, college when taken seriously and utilized to the fullest extent can land you right where you want to be sooner than you ever could have imagined. Dont fret! College is only as hard as you make it. Yea being away from famiily and making new friends is scary; the whole thought of college can be a bit itimidating but trust me if you work hard you will be okay. Remember you want to be apart of hip-hop, you want to change the world, and you inspire to be just like your favorite artist. No need for concern or to be apprehensive about anything because its your time to shine like the stars.
One thing you will have to learn in your first quarter is adjusting to the speed of college life at Art Institute because it can get hectic if you fall behind!!! So stay on your game!!! The advice my group members and I would give to future students is to do all that you can to be the beautiful unique individual you are and dont worry about what anyone will say or think about you!!! Expectations that future students should expect is to expect the unexpected!!! Its college baby!!!!! Now while I believe AIW is turning out to be a great school so far; there are however a few issues I have encountered that I would change. One is the professionalism or lack their of; pertaining to some of the employees that work here. To me there is a lack of urgency on some of the faculty and staff's behalf to meet the needs of the students, and last but not least Im going to end here: The registration process and the sequence in which classes have to be taken is HORRIBLE!!!!(I feel as if these things can and will improve in time after my professor sees this blog.) So to all inspiring "Art Students" who has the drive to be successful in the entertainment world should attend an art school to atleast better your chances of making it BIG! Hip Hop artists dont necessarily inspire us to attend college, but its their passion, fame, fortune, and talents they have that motivates us to want achieve our own personal goals. Its the way they touch our hearts with their words, its the way Dr. King delivered his "I Have A Dream Speech" that sends chills down my spine, its the way Barack Obama made history becoming the first African-American president of the USA, its when we lay our heads down at night and have those dreams whatever they maybe that answers the question...WHY COLLEGE????WHY ART INSTITUTE???? |
