Blast from the Past: We Need You, Teedra!

The best R&B album of what folks are now calling "the aughts" has got to be Teedra Moses' Complex Simplicity. That's no disrespect to my man Raphael Saadiq, who dropped three stellar albums during that period: Instant Vintage, Ray Ray, and The Way I See It. In fact, it's a nod to Saadiq's own outstanding taste. He produced a track on Moses' one and only full-length studio album. Moses' new album is scheduled for release this year and one can only hope that it's as beautiful, rueful, and sonically lush as her first effort. Moses, along with Saadiq, Maxwell, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu represents some of the last vestiges of integrity in contemporary black music. I'm hoping that she stops teasing us and puts out Young Lioness in the coming months. Until then, check out "Be Your Girl," the lead single from Complex Simplicity, with its lovely Ahmad Jamal sample, eerie synthesizers, and multi-tracked vocals that recall the aesthetics of Marvin Gaye:
