Not only is the “Power Remix” arguably one the most potent revisions since R Kelly’s “Ignition Remix”, but it is a direct throwback to the origins of the remake. It’s more than simply the same song with a different verse or two or an additional guest appearance. It’s a new song! Complete with a new arrangement of music. It has new verses. New features. New samples. New synth injections. And with the inclusion of Snap!’s 1990 hit, “I’ve Got The Power”, another archetype of Kanye’s unwavering appreciation for Hip Hop history, it bridges the gap between generations. The true remix has been noticeably absent from the 80s leaning sound of the 00s. Maybe it’s technology making it easier for anyone with Garage Band to toss whatever mediocre vocals over any Top 40 shot of heat rock or perhaps the creative complacency that sets in when little more that a catchy hook and thousands of YouTube views is all that’s needed to generate a buzz big enough to get on. Who knows the reason? The point is, Kanye knew the true remix was missing. Just like he knew that “the fans want that feeling of A Tribe Called Quest”. Just like he knew that Freeway would sound dope on a track with Mos Def. Kanye values his G.O.O.D Ass Job, never slacking on his craft. And when it comes to pushing the margins while providing a reminder, no one does it better. FACT.
