Events taking place over the past six months provide valuable teaching tools for African American parents and other concerned folks who are serious about preparing our children for the real world in which they live. It is important to note that the very revealing comments that follow were not made by European American cab drivers, truck drivers or NASCAR fans but by prominent European American Republicans/Conservatives, some of whom are seeking to be their party’s candidate against President Barack Obama in November 2012.

I must state upfront to not being a member of the Obama posse. He most definitely is not above criticism, even harsh criticism, for some of his actions and inactions in both the domestic and international arenas.

However the comments that follow are another thing altogether. Let’s begin with Governor Mitt Romney. He called the President “an appeaser,” which are inflammatory words to be used before a Jewish American audience. On another occasion, he also said that “Obama’s beliefs would poison the very spirit of America that allows us to become one nation under God.” For New Gingrich, Mr. Obama is a “food stamp president,” while Representative Michele Bachmann insists that he is someone from whom “we must reclaim our Republic.” Former Senator Rick Santorum has been quoted as believing that “In foreign policy conflicts Obama has sided with our enemies on almost every single one.”

Conservative commentator and head of the Parents Television Council, Brent Bozzell, reportedly described the President as looking like “A skinny ghetto crackhead,” while Rep. Steve King of Iowa is quoted as saying that President Obama “has demonstrated that he has a default mechanism in him that breaks…on the side that favors the black person.” And it’s hard to imagine a member of Congress making the kind of comment on the physical attributes of former first ladies as Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. of Wisconsin did when he noted that Michelle Obama has a “big butt.”

In essence, what leading Republicans/Conservatives are proclaiming to potential European American voters is that President Obama is basically an outsider who poisons the very spirit of American and almost always sides with the country’s enemies. He is also a food stamp president and skinny ghetto crackhead who favors African Americans. Thus he is someone from whom the country must be reclaimed. African American parents and others who are concerned about our children and our communities must use the above comments as teaching tools that will prepare them to successfully deal with the real world. Not doing so will jeopardize their present and future.
